Wedding Getting Ready

Hey, I'm Vanessa Joy, and today, I'm going to walk you through how to beautifully capture wedding getting-ready moments. This is one of the most important parts of the wedding day because it sets the tone for the entire event.

Start with the Scene

When I first arrive on a wedding day, I don’t immediately jump in and start taking close-up shots. Instead, I take a step back and capture the environment—the bridal suite, the details, and the overall atmosphere. These wide shots set the scene and help tell the full story of the day.

Thoughtful Composition and Angles

One of my key rules is to never photograph anyone with only half their makeup done. It’s important to wait until the bride and bridesmaids are more polished so they feel their best in the images. I also pay attention to lighting—natural light from windows works beautifully to create soft, flattering images.

Details That Matter

Getting-ready moments are full of intricate details—the wedding dress hanging elegantly, the shoes, jewelry, and invitation suite. I take my time capturing these elements before moving on to candid moments of the bride and her bridal party. These details not only enhance the wedding gallery but also create lasting memories.

Candid Over Posed

A big part of my approach is to let moments unfold naturally. I encourage laughter, small interactions, and the excitement that comes with the day. The bride’s mother adjusting her veil, a bridesmaid fixing the bride’s train—these are the genuine, emotional moments that truly matter.

Final Touches

As we get closer to the bride stepping into her dress, I shift my focus to more intimate moments. Whether it’s the maid of honor helping with buttons or the bride taking a deep breath before walking down the aisle, these final getting-ready shots are some of the most powerful.

Capturing wedding getting-ready moments is all about being present, observing, and finding beauty in the smallest details. With these tips, you’ll be able to create stunning, timeless images that the couple will cherish forever.
